A Shaken Bible began as a casual experiment after a Gillian Rose conference. It then developed into a hyper-redacted overhaul of the King James Bible of 1611, which returned the heretics and ranters to its pages, Blake included. It also gave the bible a proletarian gob.

The late Andrew Shanks—who contributed the preface—correctly identified a ‘moral longing’ in the urge to return to these texts, but this can only ever be a deracinated exercise, in our continuing epoch of nihilism, as Nietzsche defined it.

A Shaken Bible evolves slowly, across editions. This new edition also presents a revised essay on the text by the author.

STEVE HANSON completed an MA and PhD at Goldsmiths. Small Towns, Austere Times was published in 2014, by Zero Books. Following a fire in a rental house which nearly killed him—due to a faulty fusebox—he switched to experimental writing. Proceedings, The General and Last Days of Pompeii: A Comedy are just some of the titles has had published in the intervening years.
